Actually, I used to be an editor for an American Manga (Japanese comic) site, and it was my job to get in touch with all the American and Jaapnese manga publishers and stay in a good relationship with them.
It was also my job to browse through the major Japanese blogs, 2ch, other famous "otaku"-hangers for latest news, so I can understand this anime/manga-subculture better than most people can as someone in the culture.
I think HK is going through a phrase where Japan went through 2 decades ago: the "hey, manga's not just for kids.. because these kids grow up, and they still like reading manga/anime/video games" Eventually, the Japanese get over it and accept it as part of their culture even though the "otaku" was once labeled as a poisonous bunch in the society.
But there's one thing HK culture is in a much disadvantage position than Japan is and once was, because all these "otaku" remains in the consumer ends of things in HK. It would only be my opinion that if you like anime/manga/video games so much, why not make a career of it? Embrace what you like as part of your life? But there aren't enough opportunities in HK for people to do that here, so these "otaku" who likes anime/manga/video games is forced to put what they like in the fantasy-realm.
It is a difficult situation to fix, and I think it's too late for our generation. For the next generation, give kids more creative space, possibilities and opportunities; let them realize their hobbies doesn't have to be separated from their studies/work.
