my fina101 told me...these are all finance jargons...

call and put are options that give you the right to purchase something at the pre-agreed price
buyer of call options wants the price to go up
and vice versa, buyer of put options wants the price to go down

sell = short
long = buy

if i long a call option 0005.HK at $140, i'll have the right, (but not obligation) to buy HSBC at $140 even if the stock worths $200 at maturity

if i long put of HSBC at $140, even if market price at maturity is $120, i will be able to sell it to the writer of the put at strike price of $140...

So, long short just jargons without special meaning.
Then what is the jargon for those derivatives with obligation to implement?
Futures? Contracts?

there are a lot of different contracts, futures being one of those, there are also forward contracts etc.
you are obliged to fulfill those contracts
if you long a contract, that means you'll have to buy the underlying at the pre-agreed price...  

futures are traded on the exchange, you are not subjected to counter party default risk
forwards are privately settled...

btw, why r u interested in these now?

I am interested in many of things...
Read the news about the ban of shorting stocks of financial industry a week ago and didn't know the definition of shorting.
