Complex numbers is in everywhere in physics but you are right, EM has it.

Complex number provide you an extra dimension to store "information"
This channel is perfectly good for carrying calculation ( more beautiful in the form of expression )

Of course, in EM, you can carry out calculation without the complex number but then the math is messy to hell.
