It is difficult to explain here. Since what are the exact meaning of idealism and materialisn is not yet clear.
I think when u talk of Materialism, u are talking of KArl Marx. For him, materialism mean that our culture, political system, law, thinking etc (these he call upper -structure) is decided and formed by our actual economical activities. So in slave society, federal society, capitalist society and socalist society, we have different culture and legal systems. Only when we change the capitalist soctiey to be the socialist society, by changing it form of production and economy, can a socialist soceity form, and all people (especially the workers) will be equal.
For marx, most philosophy before him is idealism. Since they miss the importance of the lower structure (actual economy activities), they just focus on the ideaology. So these philosophy cannot change the world.

But actually there are still many other meanings of Idealism................
