Haha! 我係一個“阿四” - got this name since college, which was long long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
Downtown is not as bad as you think. A lot of chic restaurants, bars and converted residential properties (had one before as investment) are within walking distance. As a starter, try Bottega Louie.
Meanwhile, a day time historical walk would give you some appreciation of the glory past as well as its revitalization. But a wrong turn could indeed lead you to some rather shady area. So, driving around at night with your top down is not on my list of recommendations.
If you enjoy art (as compared to architecture), then find some time to both Getty Center and Getty Villa (and do your top down cruising on HWY 1)...
You should also drive down to Newport Beach and Balboa Island to check things out - a neighborhood that I am aspiring for.
Let me know if you need more suggestions, and don't hesitate to ask anyone from here for help if you decided to stay for an extended time.
Unrelated note: enjoyed your story as you gave me a flash back of someone who crossed my life... the past few months must be a lot of dramas for you. Chill out, take a deep breath, and chart your new life with a purpose and meaning for you - over a glass of apple martini of course.
