It depends on how to interpret Existentialism. Some one feel that theis theory is pesimistic, aanother may feel that it is optimism.
Did you heard of Myth of Sisyphus by Camus?
For existentialist, life is meaningless, we are just "thrown" into this world without any aim or goal. But we can get the meaning of life from what we are doing. So they call their theory existentialism, existence precedes essence
