I have one friend learning Wing Chun from apprentice of 葉問's son..pretty good.
also have one friend learning Tai Chi from someone famous but I don't know ( not into this field )
They are a bit ...

you remind me of my aunt's son ... his mama sent him to the shaolin temple since he was 6 or 7 years old to learn kung fu and how to live independently and he's still up there

by the way why would your friends pick up these inner martial arts? any particular reasons like health issues or what?

If time allows, learning earlier is better as aging is really a problem
Harder to pick up a skill if you are older
