Each professor is specialized at a field or two, usually.
I guess it may wrong at day 0 on picking the advisor.
I was not experienced in doing so.
Back to the old days, I love physics, usually the theoretical ones as most do
But then I knew I had no match with theoretical physicist here. I barely kept up with the homework here, was struggling days and nights just to finish the problem sets.
I knew my limit, so i planned to do something else
Experimental physics, hell no, totally not my cup of tea.
I like programming. Computational fits me well. I can program day and night.
Usually, it involves data analysis/simulation.
Simluations ( involves modelling ) is more theoretical work which i chose to avoid.
Data analysis involves some experiment usually, that I dislike
Then in observation astrophysics, we don't need to do experiment and can get the data from telescope for my computational work. Oh well, it sounded good.
I don't have solid astrophysics background and I took 1 year to acquire the knowledge. In the meantime, I want to get some thing more related to astrophysics instead of astronomy. I picked the advisor which sounded good.
We did talk about what I liked to do but I dont' have much concepts behind as I am pretty new to the fields ( my another fatal point ), then I did some model testing, data analysis.
Perhaps I may not fit the working style of my boss. He's always busy on his own, relatively hands off on my job. I dont quite know what I can do, on the meantime, the postdoc left to Penn State U for his assistant professorship...suddenly lack of guidance....changes start to change...
