I doubt if they are happy with it..
Ancient people have simple minds ( Here I take the population as mostly peasants, in villages. )
They were struggling for the living and didn't bother too much about their spiritual lives.
Even they might find another half not that good, it's really hard to find another one ( unless you are rich to get more wives )
and it's nearly impossible to get divorced and get another wife.
Above is for men's case, it's even worse for women due to inferior of social position.

People "have to" live with it.
Like now, we have choices and problem/conflict got obvious

I am a smart gal. I have tried hard to change one person. But I can't change him. For example, I think hardly change one person mature as you.

What about all those Islamic countries that still believe in arrange marriage... and no-dating? 

I don't know if you guys have ever had Islamic friends, but the tradition is that, there is no dating allowed.  The girl's family... brothers or father arrange for men to meet the girl, and the girl have a talk with him, he then decides to propose to her... and she can only accept or decline (there's no... let's wait awhile and see... no... let's date a bit to see.. no... let's get engage for now...)

Muslims people...
They are too conservative...it's hard for open mind people to understand them.

Why do you want to change someone?

Now, if you change your another half, it indirectly implies there is a list in your heart.
A bunch of personalites/characteristic that you prefer.

For friends' good, oh well, it's ok

to be honest, if it is good, I dont mind girls try to change the boys...
I do think both side needs to work out something so that they can communicate better ...

cuz only hlf the list iz chked...n u wnt ur whole list filled w/ chk marks..

ummm ... imho we would most likely succeed to fair well in love relationships only if we can EMBRACE others shortcomings and ACCEPT them the way they are
