now i guess u r using Internet Explorer go 'Tools' and click 'Programs'
at the bottom u should see 'Manage add-ons' and click on tat button
click any add-on names containing "java" / "shockwave flash object" / "adobe flasher" (all ActiveX Control type) and then click the 'disable' button on the left hand bottom
should you wanna block the avatar as well go 'Tools' again and click 'Advanced' this time
scroll down the bar until you see 'Multimedia'
untick 'Show pictures'
warning: since you disable some of the add-ons you cannot view smilies (wat a big drawback n you goto memorise their positions esp this one :smile_47 and some websites too like youtube ... but you can enable them AT ANY TIME if you want to


if you are using FireFox 3.0 or above its much easier
go 'Tools' and 'Options'
untick 'java' and 'java script'
once again you wont be able to view some websites unless you enable them again
